Invitation to the launch of the Barnet Fairness Commission

Date: July 18, 2019
Time: 12:00 am - 12:00 am
Location: Trinity Church, Avion Crescent, Grahame Park Way, NW9 5QY

I would like to invite you to the launch event of the Barnet Fairness Commission with Guest Speaker, Catherine West MP who established the very first Fairness Commission as leader of Islington Council.

The launch takes place at 6pm on Thursday 18 July, 2019 at Trinity Church, Avion Crescent, Grahame Park Way, NW9 5QY.

The Commission will operate for a year, looking at how we can work together as a community to tackle inequality and achieve a fairer, more inclusive and more prosperous borough. It will make its final recommendations in summer 2020.

Its four main areas of focus will be:

  1. Mapping inequality and community resources
  2. Building community infrastructure and a thriving social enterprise sector
  3. Strengthening community cohesion and tackling hate crime
  4. Addressing gender inequality and ending domestic violence and abuse

Originally an idea suggested by Barnet’s Labour councillors, the Barnet Fairness Commission has been established on a non-partisan and cross-party basis and with the involvement of local community groups. The Chair of the Commission is Lord Roy Kennedy of Southwark – Shadow Spokesperson in the House of Lords on Housing, Communities and Local Government.

The other confirmed Commissioners are:

Abdurzak Hadi, Barnet Citizens / Somali Bravanese Welfare Association

Rabbi Rebecca Birk, Finchley Progressive Synagogue

Cllr Ross Houston, Deputy Leader of the Barnet Labour Group

Anna Kyprianou, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean, Middlesex University

Richard Logue, resident and Lib Dem local election candidate in 2018

Julie Pal, Chief Executive of Community Barnet

Cllr Reema Patel, Barnet Labour Group Lead on Adults & Social Care

Imam Hamid Qureshi, Islamic Association of North London

Kate Salinger, resident and former Barnet Conservative councillor
